Flow Control Refractories

Slide Gate Plate

Essential refractory components used in steelmaking ladles to control the flow of molten metal. Fitted outside the ladle in a mechanism that is hydraulically operated.

Application

Two slide gate plates, one ladle nozzle and one collector nozzle form a set. The set is fixed onto the ladle: the ladle nozzle — also called the inner or fixed nozzle — sits in a well block embedded in the silica ramming mass lining, the plates are fitted outside the ladle in a hydraulically operated mechanism, and the collector nozzle attaches to the bottom plate.

The system operates and controls the flow of molten steel from the ladle to the tundish.

Expected life

A 1QC system will on average cast 50–60 MT of molten metal; a 2QC system about 70–80 MT. Depending on ladle capacity, life can be expressed in heats or campaigns.

Actual life depends heavily on steel chemistry, on avoiding slag flowing through the refractory system, and above all on adequate and proper cleaning of the bore of the slide plates and ladle nozzle.
